Austrian and Swiss cities top DACH ranking in Tutela crowdsourced report

Friday 12 July 2019 | 11:01 CET | News

The Austrian city of Graz ranked first in the DACH region for consistent quality of its mobile network with a score of 84.6 percent, followed by Bern in Switzerland with 84.2 percent, according to a report by Tutela. It used data collected from 3.4 million speed tests and over 21 billion measurements in the five largest cities in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Graz ranked first among the cities in Austria, too, and Bern had the highest average download speed (29.3 Mbps) among the fifteen DACH cities tested. In Bern, nearly 40 percent of data traffic recorded by Tutela went over a 4G connection, compared with a maximum of 11 percent in the German cities.

In general, the ten cities tested in Austria and Switzerland outperformed the five cities in Germany both for consistent quality and average download speed thanks to higher rates of 4G use for data traffic in Swiss and Austrian cities. The report recorded higher use of 3G networks in Germany.

Among the operators, Hutchinson Drei in Austria was the leader for excellent, consistent quality, or was placed first alongside A1. All the operators in the five Austrian cities had over 75 percent of tests meet or exceed the excellent, consistent quality threshold. A1 provided the fastest average download speeds either outright or jointly with Drei Hutchinson in the five Austrian cities tested.

Sunrise leads the ranking in Switzerland for consistent quality either outright, or drawing with Swisscom in four of the five cities tested. Swisscom had the highest average download speed in the five largest cities. In Germany, Munich tops the ranking among the five largest cities with 76.9 percent, likely as a result of its higher percentage of mobile data over a 4G connection compared with other German cities.

O2 came first among operators, either on its own or jointly with another operator, in four of the five cities. Berlin had the fastest average download speed at 16.2 Mbps, yet finished third of the five cities tested for excellent, consistent quality.
