Average Dutch data subscription falls to 2.3 GB a month

The average data subscription in the Netherlands fell to 2.3 GB at the end of 2015 from 2.6 GB two years ago, according to a survey by the Telecompaper Consumer Panel. Despite the continued growth in data traffic, many new mobile data users start with smaller plans, pulling down the average size of subscriptions.

In the past two years, the number of people who say they don't use mobile data has fall to 25 percent, from 43 percent in 2013. The new data users often take a medium to small data subscription to start, driving the fall of 300 MB in the average size of a data plan on the Dutch market.

Almost half (47%) of the Dutch now have a plan with 1 GB per month, nearly triple the level of two years ago. Eleven percent have a plan with 1-3 GB, up from 4 percent at the end of 2013, and 5 percent have 4-20 GB, up from 1 percent two years ago. Few Dutch have unlimited data plans anymore, as most operators have phased these out.

Most consumers said they expect their next data subscription to be 1 GB (49%), and 30 percent said they don't expect to need more than 500 MB. However 23 percent said they expect to take a plan of more than 1 GB for their next subscription.
