Bahamas mulling launch of third mobile operator

The Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority (URCA) of the Bahamas is paving the way for a possible third mobile operator in the country to compete with BTC and Aliv, according to a document released by the regulator. The ‘Draft Annual Plan 2021’ indicates that the government has entrusted URCA with carrying out a feasibility and market analysis by the end of the second quarter of the year to support any recommendations made.

BTC’s 16-year monopoly on mobile communications in the Bahamas finally came to an end in 2016 with the launch of the Aliv brand, partly owned by Cable Bahamas (CBL). Aliv grew to a customer base of over 170,000 at the end of 2019 when it accounted for around 37 percent of the local mobile market in terms of revenues.
