BBVA signs deal to bring Alipay mobile payments to Spain

Wednesday 28 June 2017 | 14:40 CET | News
Spanish bank BBVA has announced an agreement with Alibaba unit Ant Financial Services to allow users of the Alipay mobile payment platform to purchase goods and services all over Spain. The bank said the deal means the 400,000 Chinese tourists who visit Spain each year can use the same QR-based barcode payment system they employ at home when making a purchase. BBVA added that in 2016 Chinese visitors spent an average of EUR 2,040 each in Spain, making them the highest spenders to visit the country.
