Bcast develops DAB+ broadcasting

Monday 13 May 2019 | 13:52 CET | News

Polish operator Bcast is moving forward with the development of digital radio broadcasting in Poland, reports Media2.pl. After the DAB+ implementations in Warsaw and Wroclaw, the company has launched another multiplex in Tri-City.

The service, as in previous cases, will be based on the DABCAST platform. It is a proprietary Bcast product. DABCAST will allow the company to offer the possibility of creating digital radio as a service (Radio-as-a-Service). The technology of signal multiplexing developed by the team of engineers and its conversion on the transmitting side with the use of proprietary radio transmitters, releases broadcasters from the need to purchase expensive equipment and rather get the service for an affordable subscription. As part of the monthly fee, they receive a complete service together with a fully functional "virtual studio" for managing the programme.

The product will be co-financed from the Horizon 2020 programme, Phase II. Thanks to DABCAST, the company has an  opportunity to expand into new foreign markets as well as expand its cooperation with existing partners around the world. Demand for its product has already been reported by Italian consortium DAB+ digitalradiogroup.it and the leader of the German FM market, Uplink. It has recently received an offer inquiry from one Asian countries,

The implementation carried out by Bcast are part of the plans of the National Broadcasting Council, whose aim is to popularise the digital radio standard in Poland. As part of the Council's strategy, over 30 local multiplexes will be launched in selected Polish cities. Thanks to this, the number of transmitters operating in DAB+ will be significantly increased. Until now, only Polish Radio stations could be heard in DAB+.

Since the first implementation in Warsaw, Bcast has received many inquiries regarding the launch of its multiplexes in other cities, both on the side of small broadcasters and listeners.

The launch of the DAB+ test in Gdansk differs from those in previous cities due to the fact that the radio signal will be broadcast from two different locations. The first facility was launched at the end of April, the second will be launched at the turn of May and June.

The launch of the multiplex in Gdansk is the last of a series of announced implementations. The company is in active negotiations with partners and institutions to further commercialise DABCAST both in Poland and abroad.
