BeIN Sports sells Ligue 1 football rights for sub-Saharan Africa to Canal Plus, Kwese - report

Canal Plus International has secured French-language rights to show Ligue 1 football matches in sub-Saharan Africa during the six seasons running from 2018/2019 to 2023/2024, according to information gathered by TV Sports Markets. Kwese Sports has reportedly bought English- and Portuguese-language rights to France’s top division games for the same period. Both deals were reached with BeIN Sports, which had acquired these international rights in 2014.

The agreements also cover France’s second-tier Ligue 2, alongside the Coupe de la Ligue and Trophee des Champions tournaments.

Canal Plus is already the holder of the French-language rights for the current three-season cycle, running from 2015/2016 to 2017/2018, while the English- and Portuguese-language rights are held by pay-TV broadcaster Fox Sports.

According to the same source, BeIN is also in the process of selling Ligue 1 international rights for the Brazilian, Latin American and US markets.

The agreement with BeIN Sports also cover France's second-tier Ligue 2, alongside the Coupe de la Ligue and Trophee des Champions tournaments.

Egyptian court rules BeIN Sports breached anti-trust rules over package deal

Qatar's BeIN Sports said it was "shocked and appalled" by the decision of an Egyptian court to fine the broadcaster USD 22 million for violating anti-trust regulations, AFP reported. The Cairo court said on 30 January that BeIN had violated competition rules through its package deal system, which forces viewers to pay for events they may not be interested in watching.

BeIN Sports will continue to broadcast matches from La Liga football tournament in France, after securing exclusive rights for three more seasons, based on information gathered by L'Equipe. The company has reportedly agreed to pay on average EUR 30 million per year to retain the rights until the 2020-2021 season, compared with EUR 26 million under the current contract.

Sub-Saharan Africa set for world's fastest TV growth but low incomes hamper digital switch

Between 2016 and 2021, Sub-Saharan Africa will be the world's fastest-growing TV market, according to a regional report by IABM published by CommsMEA. The switch to digital broadcasting is being hampered by low incomes, as many viewers would be unable to afford new receivers.Some MEA broadcasters backed by state aid have seen their budgets cut following the decline in oil prices, says Lorenzo Zanni, lead research analyst at IABM.

Sub-Saharan Africa to add 17.4 million pay-TV subscribers by 2023

The number of pay-TV subscribers in Sub-Saharan Africa will increase by 74 percent between 2017 and 2023 to reach 40.89 million, according to a report by Digital TV Research. The Sub-Saharan Africa Pay TV Forecasts report estimates that subscriber growth will outstrip revenue progress. Revenues will climb by 41 percent to USD 6.64 billion by 2023, up by USD 2 billion from 2017.

Kwese TV has announced it now has 77 channels in Zimbabwe, five of which are always free. More channels will be added in the New Year, rising to 100 by the end of March. Kwese said is not trying to emulate any other player in the market, but has its own "vision" of how things should look, and it is systematically implementing that vision.

Kwese TV and MTN are cooperating to sell Kwese television decoders through MTN stores in Nigeria. A Kwese kit comprising a dish, decoder and installation costs NGN 10,960. Kwese is also running a seasonal promotion which offers new subscribers two months' complimentary service if they pay NGN 1,590 in addition to the NGN 10,960 before 31 December.

Kwese Free Sports goes on air in Liberia

Pan-African media group Econet Media and Raising Africa Media Incorporated (RAM) have introduced Kwese Free Sports to Liberia. The free-to-air channel will be available on CLAR TV and will show content including the Premier League, the NFL, Brazil Serie A, Copa Del Rey, motorsports and international boxing. It can be received on FTA analogue set-top boxes and digital terrestrial television (DTT) platforms.

BeIN Sports buys Ligue 1 international rights until 2024

Qatar-owned premium channel BeIN Sports has bought international broadcasting rights for France's Ligue 1 football division for six seasons from 2018/2019 to 2023/2024 from the professional football league. BeIN is paying a guaranteed minimum of EUR 480 million, with revenues shared 50/50 above the minimum. At EUR 80 million a year, the price is 150 percent higher than under the Al Jazeera subsidiary's previous agreement of EUR 32.5 million a year until 2017/2018.
