Belgacom launches commercial VDSL2 vectoring service
Belgacom announced the commercial launch of its VDSL2 vectoring service based on equipment from Alcatel-Lucent. The service offers speeds up to 70 Mbps, more than double the existing VDSL2 offer. It will initially be available in Mechelen, Herstal, Laken, Roeselare and Bergen, with more cities added from April. By 2016, the entire copper network, including 22,000 fibre-enabled cabinets, should be upgraded to the faster speeds.

Belgacom has been working with Alcatel-Lucent since 2011 on developing the vectoring technology. Other partners include home gateway providers Sagemcom and Technicolor and chip developers Broadcan and Ikanos. The commercial launch follows a trial with 1,000 customers last year.

At the end of 2013, Belgacom had more than 1 million active VDSL2 lines and VDSL2 coverage for 88.5 percent of the population.
