Belgian court refers data retention appeal to EU Court

Friday 20 July 2018 | 10:39 CET | News
Belgium's Constitutional Court has referred an appeal against the country's data retention law to the EU Court of Justice for questions. Belgium adapted the data retention requirement for communication operators in 2016 to take account of the EU's ruling in 2015 that such laws could violate fundamental human rights. Four non-profit groups, including the bar association of francophone lawyers and human rights defence groups, filed an appeal against the new Belgian law, saying it still violates basic rights.
