BlackBerry exec in charge of PlayBook tablet resigns

Thursday 25 July 2013 | 10:51 CET | News
A BlackBerry executive vice president in charge of mobile computing, David J Smith, has resigned for personal reasons, but will stay with the company through a proper transition, the Canadian smartphone maker told the Wall Street Journal. Smith, who has been with BlackBerry for 8 years, was given responsibility for the unsuccessful PlayBook tablet a few months after its launch in 2011. Poor sales led the company to write down almost USD 500 million in unsold inventory in 2012. Smith's departure is the latest in a series of executives leaving BlackBerry as it continues to reduce its workforce.
