BlackBerry lays off 200 workers

BlackBerry announced it has laid off 200 workers at its head office in Ontario and at an office in Florida, the New York Times reported, citing a notice filed with the State of Florida. Most of the layoffs occurred at the company’s headquarters in Waterloo, Ontario, and some at an office in Florida. The filing indicates 75 people at a branch in Sunrise.

Blackberry said that as it continues to execute its turnaround plan, it remains focused on driving efficiencies across its global workforce.

CEO John Chen is shifting BlackBerry to a company that will mainly sell software and services to businesses and governments. He has repeatedly made it clear that the company will continue to produce phones only if that business can at least break even.
