Brazil latest to join Chile's Asia-Pacific cable project

Brazil has become the second South American country to sign up to Chile's Humboldt transoceanic cable project to connect South America with Oceania and Asia, following Argentina at the start of the year. In a statement, Chilean telecommunications watchdog Subtel said Brazil's decision represented a definitive boost to the political and economic viability of project in view of the country's huge volume of traffic. Chile's communications minister Gloria Hutt also expressed the hope that Uruguay, Paraguay and eventually Bolivia will likewise confirm their participation in the project.
