Brexit could result in a 'digital dividend' for the UK, such as cheaper, better quality broadband and mobile phones, if the Government adopts a more ambitious digital sector strategy, according to a new report commissioned by the Carnegie UK Trust. The report suggests that UK consumers could benefit from better prices, services and improved customer service in digital markets if the Government decides to adopt measures such as retail market regulation.
The report also suggests that rural broadband could be given a boost by relaxing state aid rules, which would make it easier for national and local government to support SMEs in delivering broadband to the most remote areas. The report also outlines risks to digital consumers in the UK from leaving the EU. These include a possible drop in the number of international workers in the digital sector and the fact that the UK will become a smaller market for businesses launching new products and services.
