Brightspeed to invest USD 2 billion in fibre rollout in US

The Lumen operations under acquisition by Apollo Global Management will go forward under the name Brightspeed, with headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Brightspeed said it plans to invest over USD 2 billion into bringing its internet and Wi-Fi services to more communities throughout the Midwest, Southeast and parts of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The company will connect 3 million premises to fibre over the coming five years, including harder to reach places untouched yet by advanced technology. It will also continue to provide services from its legacy copper network. 

The rebranded operations from Lumen will be led by CEO Bob Mudge, COO Tom Maguire, and chief administration officer Chris Creager. The team was previously responsible for the buildout and growth of Verizon's Fios service. Additional senior leaders include chief legal officer Steve Tugentman, chief human resources officer Colon McLean, and CTO Ashok Kumar.

US regional operator Brightspeed has attracted an investment of USD 500 million from Mubadala, the sovereign investment fund from the UAE. The investment gives it a minority stake in the North Carolina-based operator, alongside majority owner Apollo Global Management.

Brightspeed wins USD 90 mln in grants for fibre deployments in North Carolina

Brightspeed said it has been awarded over USD 90 million in grants covering 38,000 locations across 29 counties in North Carolina, as part of the state's recent round of the Growing Rural Economies with Access to Technology (Great) grant process. The Great programme is designed to fund the deployment of broadband by providing matching grants to internet service providers working to expand high-speed internet access to unserved and underserved areas of North Carolina.

Brightspeed to deploy fibre in New Jersey

Brightspeed has added New Jersey to its fibre build plans, ow in 20 states. The company wants to deliver up to 20,000 new fibre passings in the state by the end of next year, within the counties of Hunterdon, Sussex, and Warren. An additional 52,000 passings will come on board after, for a total of over 72,000 fibre-enabled locations across the company's New Jersey operating area.

Brightspeed to expand fibre network to Illinois, Michigan

Brightspeed is planning fibre builds in Illinois and Michigan, with plans for 14,000 new passings in Illinois' Knox County by the end of 2023.The company will then add 31,000 passings in the state after that, for a total of up to 45,000 fibre-enabled locations.

FCC gives green light to acquisition of Lumen operations by Apollo

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has approved the sale by Lumen of its local telecom business in 20 states to Apollo Global Management for USD 7.5 billion, including USD 1.4 billion in debt, a deal announced last summer. The approval was the last necessary regulatory clearance needed for completion. The transaction is now expected to close early in the fourth quarter.

Brightspeed to deploy 60,000 new fibre passings in Tennessee by end-2023

Brightspeed said it will deliver 60,000 new fibre passings by the end of next year in Tennessee. Another 70,000 passings will be added after that for a total of 130,000 in the state. The initial passings will be rolled out in Carter, Greene and Washington counties.

Lumen launches 8 Gbps fibre broadband service in select cities

Lumen Technologies is the latest US operator to offer 8 Gbps fibre broadband. The symmetrical Quantum Fiber service is available to select residents and small businesses in cities near Denver, Minneapolis and Seattle, with more cities to come.

Brightspeed said it plans to deliver up to 40,000 new fibre passings in the state of Pennsylvania by the end of next year, in the first phase of its fibre network build out. The company will then launch 150,000 more fibre passings in the state after that, for a total of over 190,000 across its Pennsylvania footprint.

Brightspeed has unveiled its planned fibre network build for the state of Alabama. Brightspeed will finish the first phase of construction and deliver over 60,000 new fibre passings across several counties in the state by the end of 2023.
