California gives conditional approval to Verizon takeover of Tracfone

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has conditionally approved the USD 6.25 billion acquisition of TracFone Wireless by Verizon from America Movil, asking for the fulfillment of certain consumer protection conditions. The deal came under fire by the Communications Workers of America (CWA) union and other groups concerned that the sale would reduce the number of low-cost offerings on the mobile market. The groups withdrew their opposition this summer after Verizon committed to maintaining services for low-income groups.
