Cambridge University, county council set up new fibre network venture

Thursday 11 July 2019 | 14:55 CET | News

Cambridgeshire County Council and the University of Cambridge in the UK have launched a new joint venture called Light Blue Fibre to make their duct and fibre networks available on a commercial basis. This will provide opportunities for full-fibre networks to expand digital infrastructure across Cambridgeshire.

The new venture will offer access to more than 100km of existing ducting and dark fibre on a wholesale basis, with no minimum term, to telecoms operators and infrastructure providers. The infrastructure will also be made available to local technology businesses looking to avoid expensive and time-consuming infrastructure installations to get full-fibre connectivity.

Both the County Council and the University plan to further expand their fibre and duct assets. The council's available fibre assets include ducting that is already integrated with the Guided Busway construction, and will be included in all new major road, path and cycle projects.

The University has a privately-owned optical fibre network called the Granta Backbone Network (GBN), delivering high-speed network services to colleges, institutions and research bodies linked to the University.
