Canada closer to getting new MVNO with CRTC registration of dotmobile
Canada’s Data On Tap has completed the registration of dotmobile as a full MVNO, with regulator CRTC (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission). Dotmobile CEO Algis Akstinas said the company is now one step close to becoming a full MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) and launching affordable mobile services in Canada. 

To become a full MVNO in the eyes of the CRTC, companies must have a a core network solution, the ability to handle customer billing and provisioning, and a wholesale agreement with an MNO (mobile network operator (MNO). These requirements must be met within 365 days of registration. Data on Tap said dotmobile will provide affordable mobile services for youth, seniors, students, newcomers, visitors to the country, small businesses, and families. 

Data On Tap, dotmobile, dot. and the dotmobile logo are all trademarks of Data On Tap. The CRTC will on 13 January hold a public hearing about the state of the mobile telecom industry in Canada.

In an effort to boost competition, the regulator is looking at requiring network operators to open up their networks to MVNOs. Operators oppose the plan, and the Canadian Competition Bureau also questioned whether it was the most effective solution.

Canada's Commission for Complaints for Telecom-television Services (CCTS) concluded its 2018-19 year having received nearly 19,300 complaints from telecom and TV customers, an all-time high in the organisation's twelve-year history. Canadians complained most often about their wireless service, followed in order by internet, TV and local phone services. Billing issues were the predominant irritant for customers, followed by issues related to the disclosure of important information about their service.

Canadian competition regulator says regional operators helping drive down mobile prices

Regional operators with their own mobile networks are helping to lower prices in Canada, according to the Competition Bureau. In a submission to the CRTC in its review of the mobile market, the competition regulator said Canadians could save substantially on their mobile bills if Bell, Rogers and Telus were faced with more competition from regional carriers like Freedom Mobile and Videotron.

Canada emergency management organisations to conduct public alert tests

Canada's telecom authority CRTC said all provincial and territorial emergency management organisations will conduct public alerting tests in Canada, except for Nunavut, on 27 November. Test alerts will be distributed on TV, radio and compatible mobile device connected to a LTE wireless network in all provinces and territories, except for Nunavut.
