Canal+ Afrique renews Premier League rights

Canal Plus has renewed its rights to broadcast all English Premier League games on its Canal Plus Sport channels in sub-Saharan Africa for another three seasons from August. Under the agreement, Canal Plus will show over 150 games from 13 August, plus commentary from experts and journalists.

The deal continues Canal+ Afrique's strong run of broadcast deals, after it acquired the rights for both this Copa America Centenario and the Uefa European Championship in recent weeks. The Premier League rights for the Middle East and North Africa are held by Qatar-owned operator BeIN Sports. Canal+ had previously lost the rights to show the premier league in France to rival broadcast Altice.

Canal+ extends Easy TV to Kinshasa

Canal+ Group has announced the expansion of its digital terrestrial television service for Africa, Easy TV, to Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the largest sub-Saharan African Francophone city. This is its third deployment in Africa. The service initially launched in neighbouring Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of the Congo, and in Lubumbashi, the DRC's second-largest city.

Canal Plus secures broadcast rights for Ivory Coast football

Canal Plus has signed a 5-year agreement with the Ivory Coast football federation (FIF), reports Agence Ecofin, securing the rights to broadcast the country's football championship, Ligue 1. As part of the deal, Canal Plus will broadcast Ligue 1 matches in Ivory Coast and within its African footprint, which includes over twenty countries. Featuring Ivory Coast's best teams, the Ligue 1 championship takes place from November to August and involves around 260 matches.

Canal Plus launches EasyTV DTT offer in DRC

Canal Plus has announced the launch of a second digital terrestrial transmission (DTT) offer in the Democratic Republic of Congo, called EasyTV. It was installed by Telenum DRC Group on 06 July in Lubumbashi. The offer comprises 30 Congolese, African and international channels all in digital quality for CDF 8,000.

BeIN Sports to show Euro, Copa America men's football in UAE

BeIN Sports has activated four new HD channels to cover both the Copa America Centenario and Euro 2016 men's football tournaments. Both Etisalat and Du are airing the channels for a subscription fee. Etisalat will charge AED 257 for a one-off subscription, limited to the duration of both these soccer events, while Du has set a price of AED 255. The Copa America Centenario started on 04 June, and Euro 2016 starts on 10 June.

Canal Plus Africa to show all Copa America, Euro 2016 games

Canal Plus Africa announced that it will broadcast all 32 matches of the Copa America Centenario and 51 matches of the UEFA Euro 2016 football competitions between 03 June and 10 July. The games will be carried on Canal Plus Sport 1 and Sport 2 and will be presented by the pay TV provider's journalists and African football heroes.

Canal Plus to show Rio Olympics on eight channels

Canal Plus is mobilising eight channels to cover the Rio Olympics (5-21 August). Competition events will be shown on Canal Plus, Canal Plus Sport, Foot Plus, Rugby Plus, Golf Plus, Infosport, iTele and a new channel bearing the working title "Canal Plus Rio 2016". Presenters will swap between channels. They will also compete against Athletes, for comic relief. Canal Plus has also produced a documentary on French Judo star Teddy Riner, "Dans l'ombre de Teddy Riner".

Canal Plus buys Top 14 rugby rights through 2023

French pay TV group Canal plus has extended its exclusive rights to broadcast Top 14 rugby until 2023. It already held rights to show the French national rugby leagues matches through 2019. The broadcaster also holds rights to the ProD2 league, Super Rugby, the Rugby Championship and the national team's test matches in the southern hemisphere. The latest rights acquisition price was not disclosed.
