Canal Plus satellite customers regain access to TF1 TV channels

Canal Plus has announced that customers have regained access to TF1's five television channels over its satellite platform, following the intervention of French broadcast authority CSA and the minister of culture, Francoise Nyssen. The government's formal request was in defence of users accessing the TF1 channels over TNT Sat, a satellite offering popular among households that have poor reception via the standard digital TV signal. While this subscription-free platform was outside the scope of the negotiations between TF1 and Canal Plus, TNT Sat users lost access to the five channels, alongside the rest of satellite pay-TV customers.

Canal Plus suspended broadcasting the five channels earlier this month, after the two companies failed to agree new terms for their distribution. It has now decided to restore access to the channels for CanalSat customers and not just for the estimated 1.5 million homes using the free TNT Sat platform. While this is good news for TV viewers, the dispute over the carriage agreement between the two companies remains unresolved.
