Canal Plus to sue TF1, France TV, M6 over film rights

Sunday 2 March 2014 | 21:27 CET | News
French satellite and terrestrial broadcaster Canal Plus has decided to sue its rivals TF1, France Televisions and M6, for allegedly shutting it out of access to French films, preventing its two new free to air channels, D8 and D17, from meeting their 40 percent French film quotas, BFM Business reports. When an incumbent channel pre-finances a film, it buys rights to premiere its first free-to-air broadcast, but often also subsequent airings, in the form of a priority or pre-emption option. According to Canal Plus such mechanisms are used in 60 to 80 percent of cases.
