Thailand’s CAT Telecom and Indian operator Tata Communications will sign a MoU for a submarine cable partnership on 17 June. Under the terms of the agreement, CAT plans to expand its international coverage and capacity, to power its business and promote the development of the digital economy in Thailand, The Nation reports. Tata and CAT agreed to progress to good-faith discussions and explore a possible partnership on a submarine cable business and other telecommunication services.
CAT Telecom is the state agency that runs Thailand's international telecommunications infrastructure, including its international gateways, satellite, and submarine cable network connections. Tata wants scalable solution for connectivity within Thailand and countries neighbouring Thailand to support its global business and customers.
The Thai government has recently announced it would allocate THB 20 billion for bridging the digital divide and promoting the country's international cable capacity. Of the total amount, THB 5 billion will be allocated to support CAT in a submarine cable project.
