Spanish operator Cellnex Telecom has joined forces with Swiss IoT provider Heliot to roll out what it describes as the first global IoT (Internet of Things) network in Switzerland. The network will be deployed over more than 350 Cellnex sites in the country, with an initial expected coverage of 50 percent of the population, rising to 90 percent in 2019. The Helios IoT network hosted by Cellnex will use Sigfox technology, enabling IoT uses that weren’t previously feasible due to high implementation, operation or maintenance costs, said the partners.

Cellnex Telecom has been operating in Switzerland since last August, when it acquired Swiss Towers AG in a consortium including Deutsche Telekom Capital Partners and Swiss Life Asset Managers. The EUR 430 million acquisition of the former Sunrise Communications subsidiary allowed Cellnex to integrate the network of 2,239 sites covering the entire Swiss territory into its European portfolio of telecommunication infrastructure.

The Swiss IoT network will be the second rolled out by Cellnex in Europe in cooperation with Sigfox after implementing the first IoT network in Spain back in 2015 and which now hosts over 1 million device connections a day.
