Cellnex to install small cells network at Atletico stadium

Monday 17 July 2017 | 11:53 CET | News

Spanish operator Cellnex Telecom has announced a deal to provide multi-operator mobile broadband coverage at Atletico Madrid’s new stadium starting from next season. Under the terms of the ten-year deal, Cellnex will install a network of up to 250 antennas, remote units as well as a fibre network and equipment located in the technical room of the new 68,000-capacity Wanda Metropolitano stadium on the outskirts of the Spanish capital. A quarter of the antennas will be located in the pitch and outdoor areas, while the rest will be installed in other indoor areas of the stadium, said Cellnex, adding that the small cells network, based on DAS (distributed antenna systems) technology, will be able to offer 2G, 3G and 4G coverage to all operators wishing to provide the service to their customers.

Cellnex said the rollout is the first of its kind in Spain but it has implemented similar solutions in large stadiums in Italy, such as the San Siro in Milan (80,000 spectators, 107 remote units and 165 antennas) and the Juventus Stadium in Turin (41,000 spectators, 38 remote units and 91 antennas).
