Chile-China fibre link to cost up to USD 650 mln

Thursday 8 June 2017 | 10:13 CET | News
The project to build a direct underwater fibre-optic cable link between Chile and China could end up costing up to USD 650 million, reports business daily Diario Financiero, citing Chilean communications regulator Subtel. In April the watchdog signed an agreement with Huawei to explore the viability of the cable link, with the Chinese company presenting its pre-feasibility study last week. Three different routes of between 20,000 and 24,000 kilometers are being studied, possibly connecting Shangai with Punta Arenas or Valparaiso and passing through New Zealand or Tahiti, said the report.
