Chile to declare internet a public service

Friday 20 August 2021 | 09:49 CET | News
Chile is set to follow countries such as neighbouring Colombia and Argentina with legislation that recognises internet as an essential and universal public service, reports news site Bio Bio Chile. The public works, transportation and telecommunications committee of Chile's lower house has approved a bill first introduced in 2020 to declare the internet a public service ahead of a final vote to be held on 21 September. The move was accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic and the "profound need for universal internet connection among families", said the congress in a statement.
