Chilean free Wi-Fi project extended to Easter Island
Chile's telecoms services regulator Subtel has announced that its ChileGob Wi-Fi programme has been extended to Easter Island (Rapa Nui). The government has awarded licences to install a total of 38 new free public Wi-Fi hotspots, including different parts of Easter Island, other remote areas and 15 more hotspots in the country's capital Santiago. The ChileGob Wi-Fi project has so far activated a total of 612 hotspots throughout the country, with president Michelle Bachelet recently revealing plans to accelerate the initiative to reach all of the country's regions, allowing users to access the internet free of charge for 30 minutes.

The new zones are part of Subtel's ChileGob Wi-Fi hotspot programme aimed at bridging the digital divide throughout the country and will be installed in schools, social centres and areas of high influx such as bus terminals, bus stops and main squares.

Over 4 million using Chile's free Wi-Fi service

A total of 4.4 million users have connected to the Chile's free Wi-Fi service aimed at bridging the digital divide throughout the country, according to a statement released by telecom regulator Subtel. There are currently over 700 Wi-Fi zones all over the country with the ChileGob initiative set to reach a total of 900 by the end of the year, rising to over 1,200 by the end of first quarter of next year. Each hotspot allows up to 25 users to access the internet at the same time for sessions of 30 minutes.

Satellite services provider O3b Networks and Chilean telecoms operator Entel have announced the launch 3G and LTE services, as well as broadband internet access, for customers on Easter Island (Rapa Nui). Chile to install 112 new hotspots in Biobio region

Chile kicks off WiFi initiative in three regions

The government of Chile has kicked off the first phase of its ChileGob WiFi hotspot program last month in in the Aysen, Los Rios and the Los Lagos regions, This phase of the project stipulates the deployment of 196 access points which will benefit 153 localities.
