China smartphone shipments decline 31% in Q1 to 140 mln units

Monday 6 May 2019 | 12:39 CET | News
Chinese handset makers' smartphone shipments fell 30.5 percent on quarter and 5.8 percent on year to 140 million units in Q1 despite Huawei's strong sales, according to online publication Digitimes.com citing Digitimes Research. Shipments were affected by lower consumer confidence in the domestic market amid the US-China trade tensions and off-peak season effects in overseas market. A Canalys study estimates China's smartphone market shrunk in the first quarter by 3 percent year-on-year to 88 million units, its worst performance in six years.
