Claro Caribbean sales down another 9% in Q4 on Puerto Rico impact

America Movil’s Claro units in the Caribbean reported fourth-quarter revenues down 9.0 percent year on year to USD 448 million following a similar 9.4 percent annual decline in Q3, as the extraordinary costs resulting from Hurricane Maria’s impact on Puerto Rico continued to bite. The company said the 16.1 percent revenue slump in Puerto Rico in the quarter was partly offset by a 2.9 percent rise in sales in the Dominican Republic thanks to data revenue increases of 13.4 percent and 11.6 percent on the mobile and fixed platform respectively. Although mobile service revenues in Puerto Rico have practically returned to their previous level, America Movil said those on the fixed line platform were over 40 percent lower year on year due to the fact around 50 percent of the island still lacks electrical power.

EBITDA for the Caribbean region came to USD 100 million, down 37.2 percent year on year, with the EBITDA margin falling to 22.2 percent of revenues from 32.2 percent a year earlier.

Overall, America Movil’s Caribbean units ended up with 5.64 million mobile subscribers on 31 December, up 3.4 percent year-on-year, with postpaid subscriber growth (4.1 percent YoY) again outstripping prepaid growth (3.0 percent YoY). Fixed-line revenue generating units were up 1.4 percent year-on-year to 2.70 million, said the company.
