Claro (America Movil) has launched Peru’s first fixed wireless access (FWA) internet service over 5G in parts of Lima. The residential internet service uses frequencies in the 3.5 GHz band recently approved for 5G services by the country’s Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC). It includes 1,000 GB of data at download speeds of up to 50 Mbps for PEN 109 (around USD 29) a month and is currently available in covered parts of the districts of Asia, Mala, Santa Maria del March, Lurin, Chaclacayo, Cieneguilla, Santa Eulalia and Ancon in Lima.
In a statement, Claro said the speed and latency benefits of 5G will be fully harnessed when further spectrum is released. Investment promotion agency ProInversion has been tasked with preparing an auction of 5G-enabled frequencies for the first half of 2022. The aim is to award 600 MHz in the 26 GHz band and 300 MHz in the 3.5 GHz band, the highest amount of spectrum the country has ever granted in just one tender.
