Peru’s transport and communications ministry (MTC) confirmed that a total of PEN 278 million will be invested as part of plans announced last month to bring fibre-optic broadband to the Amazonas region. The commitment is part of PEN 900 million package of transport and communication projects, with the latter including the rollout of more than 1,255 kilometres of fibre-optic cables for the benefit of around 119,000 people in underserved parts of the northeastern region.

The ministry also unveiled more details of the ‘Todos Conectados’ plan to connect more than 3.2 million Peruvians in rural areas of the country for the first time, saying it would install a total of 6,531 Wi-Fi hotpots in 3,636 public squares as well as bringing satellite-based internet to more than 1,100 public institutions in 860 jungle locations.
