Peru to roll out nearly 1,500 km of fibre in Huanuco region

Peru’s transport and communications ministry (MTC) announced plans to roll out around 1,460 kilometers of fibre-optic cables in the central Huanaco region to help bridge the digital divide. The PEN 214 million investment is part of a wider PEN 6.7 billion plan to improve transportation infrastructure and internet access in the region, said the ministry, which launched a similar high-speed broadband project in Cusco earlier this year.

The new deployment comes after the MTC confirmed that 18 of the 21 telecommunications projects to bring fibre to more than 2 million Peruvians in rural and underserved areas will be operational by the end of next year. The projects are financed by Peru's national telecommunications fund Pronatel and the aim is to bring high speed internet to over 4,600 localities and 7,658 public entities, including schools, health centres and police stations.
