Cnil studies kids sites' data collection, parental controls

French data protection agency Cnil looked at 54 websites of different types used by children and teenagers as part of Internet Sweep Day, finding that 87 percent collected personal data (vs a 67% international average) and only 39 percent of the sites offered users a simple way to disactivate accounts. Another key finding was the fact that 62 percent of the sites offer no parental control mechanism, such as sending e-mails to inform parents that their children's data will be collected and asking for their approval.
