Colombia to raise USD 250 mln in 4G spectrum tender

Colombia hopes to raise USD 250 million in the 4G spectrum tender scheduled for 26 June, Portafolio reports, citing Colombia's ICT minister Diego Molano. "What we need to promote is more competition...for that, new entrants on the local market will have advantages as they will pay less for the spectrum and will have fewer obligations," Molano said.

According to unnamed sources within Colombia's Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (Mintic), Chilean operator Entel and Korea Telecom plan to submit bids in the June tender. UNE, ETB, DirectTV and Avantel also plan to participate in the tender.

America Movil’s unit Claro, as well as Telefonica and Tigo, will face certain restrictions in the tender, Molano added. Claro will only be allowed to bid for spectrum in the 2,500 MHz frequency band, because of its dominant position on Colombia’s mobile market where it currently holds a 60 percent share. Telefonica and Tigo will be able to bid for AWS (1,700 MHz-2,100 MHz) and 1,900 MHz spectrum.
