Colombia's Avantel handed USD 3 mln fine for illegal spectrum use

Monday 7 June 2021 | 11:11 CET | News
Colombia's national spectrum agency (ANE) has fined mobile operator Avantel a total of COP 10.6 billion (just under USD 3 million) for illegal use of spectrum owned by new operator WOM Colombia. The decision relates to 20MHz in the 700MHz band secured by WOM back in December 2019, several months before the latter reached a deal to acquire a controlling stake in Avantel. According to ANE, Avantel "did not have prior and express authorisation from the Ministry of Information Technologies and Communications for the use of those frequencies."
