Consumers union warns over slamming at Belcentrale

Friday 10 August 2018 | 10:23 CET | News

The Dutch consumers union announced that it's received multiple complaints about the telephony provider Belcentrale and Garantiebellen, a company acquired by Belcentrale. The complaints claim the companies are attempting to appear as KPN and offering five-year contracts that are difficult to cancel.

Over 100 complaints have been received by the Consumentenbond about the two companies. As these involve business contracts, there is less regulation protecting against fraud and misleading sales than in the consumer market. Parliament has been trying to address this for several years.

The Dutch ministry of economic affairs and regulator ACM have developed measures aimed at protecting small businesses better from this kind of fraud and slamming. The ACM recommends businesses stay alert and ask more questions if they are unsure whether the line transfer is legal. The ministry is preparing further legislation.
