Court orders Euskaltel to pay Orange EUR 222 mln
A court in Spain's Basque region (Tribunal Superior de Justicia del Pais Vasco – TSJPV) has validated the decision of a Paris court demanding regional cable operator Euskaltel pay mobile operator Orange EUR 222 million in damages over the pair's mobile partnership termination. Euskaltel broke the partnership with Orange in November 2006, with both operators claiming the right to existing customers. Spanish telecoms regulator CMT then settled the dispute by ruling the pair had to continue their partnership, running an uninterrupted service for the 460,000 existing customers, until users decided to move either to Euskaltel or to the Orange network. Euskaltel said it will appeal the Basque court's decision.

Kutxabank hires Citi to sell Euskaltel stake – report

Basque bank Kutxabank has hired Citigroup to sell part of its stake in Euskaltel. Kutxabank plans to sell a stake of 30% in the regional cable operator, Cinco Dias reports, without naming sources. Kutxabank is currently Euskaltel's main shareholder with a 68 percent stake in the Spanish operator. Other Euskaltel shareholders include Iberdrola (11.85%), Endesa (10.64%), EITB and EVE (5.32% and 2.13%, respectively), and Mondragon Inversiones (2.13%).

Orange loses 54% of Basque customers to Euskaltel

Orange has lost 54 percent of the customers it shared with Basque operator Euskaltel, reports Cinco Dias. Customers had to choose between the two companies when the pair's partnership in the Basque region in Spain broke down and Euskaltel opted to become a virtual mobile operator using the Vodafone network. Orange says it has retained 46 percent of the pair's customers, but the loss has still contributed to a customer loss of 56,000 customers in the first three months of this year.
