Court orders first web suspension for illegal downloading

For the first time since France created the Hadopi anti-internet piracy authority, a court has given autorisation for a persistent illegal downloader to lose his internet connection. He was fined EUR 600 and will lose his broadband connection for 15 days. There have been several court cases, which come after three warnings from the authority, but none had led to a conviction until now. Le Monde writes that there is no certainty that the sanction will be applied. Operators argued at the time the legislation was passed that the legal requirement to leave a person's phone and e-mail in service while blocking access to the web is technically complex. The Hollande government is reassessing Hadopi's future and is considering handing its responsibilities to broadcast regulator CSA. It was one of his campaign pledges to shut down the controversial agency based on civil right to not be denied internet access.
