Croatia proposes ten-fold rise in spectrum fees

Croatian mobile operators have criticised the proposed changes to regulations on radio-frequency fees, put up for public debate on 25 May, according to local media reports. Prepared by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Transport and Infrastructure, the new rules propose that operators pay 5 percent of total gross annual income for the use of spectrum, compared to the current figure of 0.5 percent. Croatian operator Vipnet claims that the new measure will benefit neither the state nor users. Initial estimates by Hrvatski Telekom indicate that the operator would have to pay an additional HRK 150 million per year. The public consultation is open until 11 June.
