Cable & Wireless Communications (CWC) has announced the launch of a charitable foundation with seed funding of USD 500,000 to help support humanitarian efforts across the Caribbean region, starting with relief from the impact of Hurricane Irma and Maria. The initial primary purpose of the foundation will be to serve as a fundraising hub, enabling money raised to be directed to local, regional and international agencies to execute projects in affected territories, said the company. In the longer term the foundation will also support other charitable and community causes in the markets CWC serves.

The company, which operates under the retail brand Flow in the Caribbean, also announced a concerted drive to raise further funding from partners, suppliers and individual donors, including the launch of a 'Text To Donate' campaign. Customers in the Caribbean can pledge a USD 1 donation to aid the relief effort through the foundation by texting 'GIVE' to short code 2300.

Last week the company said the 2017 hurricane season had caused “significant impact” to systems and services in some of its markets, including Antigua and Barbuda, the British Virgin Islands and the Turks & Caicos Islands. Its relief efforts have included expertise deployment, humanitarian aid drops and free calls for impacted customers.
