Detachable tablets, ultraslim notebooks to buck PC trend and grow shipments in 2019-2023 - IDC

Thursday 12 September 2019 | 11:57 CET | News

PC and tablet shipments will continue to fall over the next five years but 2-in-1 devices (convertible PCs and detachable tablets) and ultraslim notebook PCs, such as Apple’s iPad Pro devices and Microsoft’s Surface tablets, will buck the trend and together grow 5 percent, according to the latest study from IDC. Overall, personal computing device shipments will fall from 2019-2022 by a CAGR of 2.4 percent. For 2020, shipments will go below 400 million, for the first time since 2010, the year the original iPad was introduced.

Specifically, total shipments will this year reach 402.2 million, to fall in 2023 to 365.7 million. For 2-in-1 and ultraslim products, shipments will rise to 47.5 million and 99.3 million 2023 from 40.9 million and 80 million this year. For desktop and desktop workstations, shipments will decline to 77.5 million in 2023 from 92.4 million in 2019. For Notebook and mobile workstations, shipments will slide to 47.7 million from 73 million while for slate tablets, they will fall to 93.8 million from 116 million.

Positive trends this year countered by tariff concerns

Positive trends within the traditional PC market this year included commercial demand driven by the approaching end of support for Windows 7. Concerns continue however about tariffs, pushing many vendors to launch their products early.

Form factor will help push interest

The 2-in-1 category will splinter, IDC said, as Apple and Microsoft go for the detachable form factor and other PC vendors for convertible PCs. Looking ahead, iOS detachables will capture almost 25 percent of the 2-in-1 market in 2019-2023.

5G will help ramp up, but only after smartphones

Apart from the form factors, the introduction of 5G will also play a role on the personal computing device market, although that ramp up should take place only after smartphones. By 2023, 10 percent of detachable tablets will be 5G-enabled, with another 29 percent running 4G. The number of ultraslim and convertible notebooks with mobile connectivity will meanwhile grow with a double-digit CAGR.
