Deutsche Telekom sees stable revenues, EBITDA drop at German business in Q4

Deutsche Telekom recorded revenues of EUR 6.26 billion in Q4 2020 at its German business, up 0.6 percent from EUR 6.22 billion in the same period a year earlier. EBITDA fell by 4.9 percent in the same period to EUR 2.12 billion, while adjusted EBITDA was up by 1.3 percent year-on-year to EUR 2.34 billion. Adjusted EBITDA AL rose by 1.1 percent year-on-year in Q4 2020 to EUR 2.33 billion.

Telekom added 2.3 million mobile customers in Germany in 2020 to reach a total of 48.52 million, including 26.0 million customers with contracts and 22.4 million prepaid customers. It counted 649,000 new customers under the brands 'Telekom' and 'Congstar' thanks to high demand for mobile tariffs with data. The StreamOn option, which includes zero-rated streaming of music, gaming and video, recorded high demand, the company said, and at the end of 2020, almost 4 million customers used the option, up 30 percent year-on-year.

The number of fixed line connections fell by 234,000 last year to 17.59 million. Telkom said it experienced challenging market development in the fixed network segment in the form of aggressive price offers from competitors. The number of broadband connections rose, however, by 388,000 last year to 14.11 million, including 9.51 million fibre connections, up 986,000 year-on-year. The number of TV subscribers rose by 246,000 last year to a total of 3.86 million. Telekom added 361,000 wholesale broadband connections to reach 7.73 million, including 6.43 million wholesale fibre lines, up by 570,000 year-on-year.

Telekom continues to expect competitive pressure particularly in the fixed line network sector in Germany but also in Europe. In the broadband market in Germany, the number of regional network operators and specialist FTTH providers is increasing, as is their market share, as they expand their own infrastructure through fibre, it said. As a consequence, competitors are gaining customers.
