Deutsche Telekom signs contract with city of Hamburg to expand residential fibre

Thursday 16 May 2019 | 09:29 CET | News

Deutsche Telekom has signed a contract with the city of Hamburg to expand the fibre network for around 9,300 households and 1,000 companies by the beginning of 2021.

Between 1 percent and 2 percent of households in Hamburg have an internet connection at a speed less than 30 Mbps. The expansion of the fibre network will extend it to underserved areas.

The broadband expansion will take place in the outskirts and less densely populated areas of Hamburg in the coming months, particularly in the districts of Bergedorf, Harburg and the southern part of the Elbe in the district of Hamburg-Mitte. The expansion works, including around 60 km of civil engineering, will start in the coming weeks.

In those areas, speed is now less than 30 Mbps, but in the future, it will be at least 50 Mbps and in some cases, over 100 Mbps. An expansion of the remaining undersupplied areas is currently being examined.

The city of Hamburg pays half the cost of the project, which totals EUR 6.5 million, through the special fund 'Digital Dividend II'. In Hamburg, 70 percent of households are connected to fibre, according to the Federal Government, and 130,000 apartments managed by city housing firm SAGA will receive a direct fibre connection in the next three years. Almost every school in the city is connected to fibre.
