Deutsche Telekom supervisory board yet to discuss Orange merger, awaits message from govt - report

Friday 29 November 2019 | 09:51 CET | News

Deutsche Telekom has not discussed yet the possibility of a merger with Orange  at supervisory board level, Handelsblatt reports citing sources. The German government, the largest shareholder in Telekom, has not signaled itself as either in favour of or against such a merger.

The government considers it legitimate for Telekom to explore all strategic options, the report added. Telekom fears, though, that the government could stop a potential transaction, and is waiting to receive a concrete message, according to the report.

A merger should have an economic rationale but would also be a political decision. The French state has a stake in Orange, too. The German Minister for Economic Affairs, Peter Altmeier, proposed in his "National Industrial Strategy 2030" to simplify the rules to allow consolidation in Europe and to establish so-called European Champions, that is, large companies that can compete with US and Chinese players. Altmeier also signed with his French counterpart Bruno Le Maire the "Franco-German Manifesto for an Industrial Policy".
