Digicel invests USD 389 min in Caribbean FTTH rollout
Digicel is planning to invest a total of USD 389 million to roll out FTTH infrastructure in Trinidad & Tobago and Barbados, reports local daily Newsday, citing the company's Trinidad and Tobago CEO Sacha Thompson. The fibre deployment will help Digicel offer "the most advanced online, television and digital service" in the local market, said Thompson, adding that the company is preparing to launch its pay-TV and fibre-optic broadband services under the Digicel Play brand in the two Caribbean countries.

Digicel activates first 4G service in Barbados

Digicel has announced the launch of a 4G LTE service in Barbados, the first available on the island. The coverage is for now limited to certain areas of the capital Bridgetown, ahead of an expansion to other locations shortly. In a statement, the operator said it has invested over USD 50 million in its infrastructure in recent months, including the installation of twelve new sites and the nation's first full fibre to the home (FTTH) network.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has announced that it has awarded the exclusive broadcast rights in the Caribbean of the forthcoming 2018 Winter Olympics and 2020 Summer Olympics to International Media Content, parent company of pay-TV broadcaster SportsMax and a subsidiary of telecommunications group Digicel. Digicel acquires Suriname-based operator Uniqa 

Caribbean mobile operator Digicel has been revealed as the buyer of 100 percent of the shares of the Surinamese subsidiary of United Telecommunication Services (UTS), which in turn owns 99.993 percent of the mobile operator Uniqa, according to an SEC filing. Digicel said it intends to integrate Uniqa's mobile customer base of around 5,000 into its existing operations in Suriname. Uniqa is currently Suriname's third mobile operator behind Telesur and Digicel itself.
