DirecTV launches 4G services in Colombia
DirecTV has launched 4G services in the Colombian market. Dubbed 'DirecTV Net', the service will initially be available in the cities of Santa Marta, Cali and Barranquilla, Portafolio reports, citing company VP Maria Elvira Restrepo. The 4G service will be initially available in Santa Marta, Cali, Barranquilla, Chia, Palmira, Barrancabermeja and Monteria. According to previous reports, the operator plans to gradually expand its 4G internet services across Colombia, and plans to reach 57 of the country's lagest cities within the next five years. DirecTV currently provides satellite pay-TV services in Colombia, and plans to initially offer 4G fixed internet services to its existing 900,000 pay-TV subscribers.

DirecTV Colombia has launched mobile broadband services through 4G technology in the cities of Duitama, Girardot and Popayan, Comunidad Ola reports. With these recent launches, the company already provides 4G mobile broadband services in 19 cities across the country. DirecTV previously said that it expects to reach 56 cities with the 4G service within the next five years. Last year, DirecTV Colombia obtained 70MHz of spectrum in the 2.5GHz band.

DirecTV expects its 4G service to reach 20 cities across Colombia by the end of the year, Portafolio reports, citing company president Roque Lombardo. The company had recently carried out a soft launch of 4G services in certain cities and expects the service to be available in 13 cities by the end of September, the executive said. DirecTV Colombia aims to reach 200,000 4G subscribers in the country in two years. Last year, DirecTV Colombia obtained 70MHz of spectrum in the 2.5GHz band.

4G LTE technology already covers nearly 75 percent of Colombia's population, El Tiempo reports. Mobile operators Movistar, Tigo and Claro had launched 4G services by the end of last year. DirecTV Latin America aims to launch fixed 4G internet services in the Peruvian market in the fourth quarter of 2014, DirecTV Latin America president Bruce Churchill told a conference call with investors.
