Discovery+ streaming service to launch in Europe with Vodafone distribution deal

Vodafone and Discovery have signed a new multi-year, multi-platform agreement giving Vodafone customers in 12 European markets continued access to Discovery content. The partners will make also the new Discovery+ streaming service available to Vodafone customers across Europe.

The agreement covers Vodafone mobile and TV customers in the UK, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain, Romania, Turkey, Portugal, Greece, Czech Republic, Iceland and Hungary. The roll-out in these 12 markets will take place during 2021 and 2022, supported by marketing campaigns. Discovery+ will be offered for varying promotional periods by market. In the UK and Turkey, Discovery+ will only be available to Vodafone mobile customers.

In addition, Discovery's linear TV channels will continue being available to Vodafone customers on TV in Germany, Spain, Ireland, Italy, Romania, Portugal, Greece, Czech Republic, Hungary and Iceland.

News of the agreement coincides with the official launch of Discovery+ in the US and Europe, replacing the previous Dplay service. The service was launched already last year in the UK and Ireland, with a distribution deal with Sky, and Discovery has agreed similar partnerships with Verizon and Italian operator TIM.

Discovery+ costs EUR 3.99 per month or EUR 39.99 per year and includes programming from channels such as Discovery, TLC, ID, Animal Planet, HGTV and Food Network, as well as new original productions. Eurosport content is expected to be added later.  The service works over Amazon Fire, iOS, Android, Chromecast, Xbox and Roku devices, as well as Samsung smart TVs from 2017 or newer.
