Dish granted more time to roll out 5G mobile network

Wednesday 16 September 2020 | 10:52 CET | News

Dish Network has received additional time to deploy its mobile network in the US. The Federal Communications Commission’s Wireless Telecommunications Bureau has officially granted Dish Network until mid-2023 to meet build-out requirements under its spectrum licences, RCR Wireless reports.

A March 2020 deadline for meeting coverage requirements in some of the spectrum had already passed. The WTB has also changed the licence terms so that Dish must use the spectrum to provide 5G New Radio-based broadband services with the frequencies, and cannot rely on other technologies.

Dish had sought a delay to meeting the roll-out targets due to the delayed closing of T-Mobile's takeover of Sprint, which gave Dish key assets to build its network. That deal did not close until April.

For each of Dish’s spectrum licenses in the AWS-4 (2000-2020 MHz / 2180-2200 MHz), lower 700 MHz E block and AWS H block (1915-1920 MHz/1995-2000 MHz) bands, Dish has until 14 June 2023 to provide 5G service. That service has to cover at least 70 percent of the population in each license area for the AWS-4 and E block licenses, and at least 75 percent in the AWS-H areas. The FCC may give the company another two years to meet the coverage targets to mid-2025, if Dish meets at least 50 percent coverage by the June 2023 date.

For Dish’s 600 MHz licenses, the 75 percent build-out requirements were brought forward to June 2025 from June 2029, bringing them in line with the rest of the spectrum licences.
