Dominican Republic approves telecom tax to fund 911 service

The Dominican Republic's chamber of deputies has approved a tax of USD 0.02 on international voice minutes with a view to funding the country's 911 emergency and security system, reports local daily El Dia. The fixed tax will be paid by all operators registered at the Dominican Telecommunications Institute (Indotel) per minute of international voice traffic, with USD 0.0025 also payable for each international SMS received by the operators. The tax was approved with 101 votes in favour and 37 against, said the report, with minister for the presidency Gustavo Montalvo keen to stress that
