DT adds smart home functions on all routers
Deutsche Telekom announced that it is integrating features of its Magenta SmartHome offering in its Speedport Smart router. Effective immediately, the routers do not just manage phone calls, internet and TV; they can also control smart home devices. In addition to Wi-Fi, the Speedport Smart now also supports the DECT ULE cordless standard – enabling the integration of smoke detectors, thermostats and other smart devices. Other protocols can be retrofitted via USB port. A USB stick for the ZigBee protocol is already available and a stick for the Homematic IP protocol is scheduled for release in the fall. 

In addition to offering the new features on new routers, DT has also updated existing routers with new firmware. The company said it equipped 170,000 households in Germany with a control centre for Magenta SmartHome overnight and it expects to ship around 1.2 million of the new smart routers each year going forward. 

The installation of the smart home features in the Speedport Smart routers includes a free version of the company's SmartHome service, with many basic functions so customers can test the service. Deutsche Telekom is also launching a new portfolio of components for Magenta SmartHome under its own brand. The devices, with their exclusive Telekom design, feature the DECT ULE cordless standard and include smoke and motion detectors, door and window contacts, and indoor sirens. Other devices, such as a connector plug for outdoors, will be released soon.

With the command 'Hello Magenta' - referring to the German operator's marketing colour - users will be able to control Telekom services around the home as well as other connected devices. The smart speaker is planned to launch on the German market in the first half of 2018.

Deutsche Telekom adds insurance to smart home platform

Deutsche Telekom announced a partnership with insurance group Ergo to bundle home insurance products with its smart home services. Unveiled at Ifa, the initial offer includes an emergency service if the smart home system detects a water leak, smoke or unauthorised access to the home. If the customer does not respond to the alert from the smart home system, Ergo's emergency services centre is alerted and takes action.

Over quarter of German smart home systems bought from telecom provider

Over a quarter of Germans (28%) with smart home systems bought the services from a telecommunications provider, such as Deutsche Telekom, according to a survey by industry group Bitkom. Another 28 percent bought the products from an electronics retailer, and 20 percent went to a specialised smart home vendor. Less than one in five (18%) bought the systems from an energy supplier, and 11 percent made the purchase online.

Unitymedia to start testing smart home gateway - report

German cable operator Unitymedia plans to start this year a pilot project on the smart home, reports Onlinekosten.de from Anga Com. The smart home gateway will be an open platform to control household devices such as lighting, thermostat, door and window locks and smoke detectors, with support for ZigBee, Z-Wave, Bluetooth and WLAN connections. It is expected to be an open device that can connect to devices from other vendors.

Ikea to start selling smart lighting products

Ikea said it plans to start selling lighting that is compatible with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and the Apple HomeKit application in summer and autumn. The plug and play system means there is no need for any new wiring or intervention by an electrician, although it does require a wireless LED lamp.

DT launches white-label smart home portfolio

Deutsche Telekom has launched a full white-label portfolio of its smart home products for use by other operators. The offering includes gateways, apps, compatible devices and services, to help telecom operators, utility providers, hardware manufacturers and other enterprises to create their own smart home products. Deutsche Telekom announced the expansion of its smart-home platform to two new countries: Slovakia and Norway. Throughout January, Telekom Deutschland is offering its Magenta Smart Home security system at half the usual monthly rate. From 04 January to 31 January, new clients can sign up for the Magenta system at a rate of EUR 4.95 per month instead of EUR 9.95 per month. Deutsche Telekom is running a promotion on its SmartHome product line. Until 28 August, users can choose between the introductory alarm system or the starter bundle for a monthly fee of EUR 4.95 instead of EUR 9.95, teltarif.de reports.
