Du, Nokia use drones for network testing

UAE operator Du and Nokia Networks, in partnership with Ascom Network Testing and DroneWorks, have been using drones to carry out mobile network testing and optimisation. The proof of concept saw drones carrying smartphones equipped with network testing applications measure Du's network KPIs at Dubai International Stadium at Dubai Sports City. Nokia analysed the data, drawing up recommendations where necessary in order to improve performance.

The drones were also used for tower inspections, radio planning and Line of Sight (LoS) testing between radio towers to achieve an optimal site design, establish a clear LoS and determine antenna heights and site locations. Drones can also help supervise the quality of installation by remotely monitoring the installation via wireless video streaming, added Nokia Networks.
