Wednesday 16 May 2018 | 17:52 CET | News
The World Cup in Russia, scheduled from 14 June to 15 July, will be showed live on TV in UHD. The Netherlands is one of 15 countries in the world where the World Cup will be broadcast in this format. During the sports event, a special version of NPO 1 will be available through participating distributors, with matches broadcast in UHD.

Viewers will need a suitable set-top box and TV to view the broadcast in Ultra HD TV via participating distributors (satellite, cable or IP TV). I

t is expected that tens of thousands of Dutch people will be able to watch the event in UHD. NPO worked together with NOS, EBU and VRT, RedBee Media, Ateme and distributors and screen suppliers for this project.

Moving forward with new technology

NPO and NOS now want the technology to become sufficiently mature in terms of specifications and standards. They want public broadcasters to innovate and develop what is necessary to fit current viewing trends, such as binge watching.
